Recent advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting the world of learning and development (L&D) in unprecedented ways. The current iterations of AI, with their ability to personalize learning, predict learning outcomes, and automate administrative tasks, has revolutionized the L&D sector, making employee training more engaging, efficient and effective.
In this e-book, we’ll examine how corporations are leveraging AI to drive their L&D initiatives, the challenges they face and the future trends in AI-powered learning with respect to three complementary perspectives: the learning leader, the learner and the business stakeholder. Along the way, we’ll highlight insights gleaned from multiple Training Industry research efforts that represent the responses of a combined 839 training managers and training decision-makers with respect to how their organizations are utilizing AI and where they see the opportunities and challenges with AI going forward.
What You’ll Learn
- How AI is being integrated into today’s employee learning programs
- How the journey of AI impacts learning leaders, learners and the wider business
- The strategic considerations for and implementation challenges of AI in L&D
- The business priorities that stem from the use of AI models in training
Why We Did the Research
With this e-book, we wanted to provide background for how L&D as a discipline has experienced success with the recent developments in generative AI. Rather than seeing AI as a universal solution that will work for any and all applications, the ideas in this e-book will provide learning leaders with a different perspective on how to best implement AI tools to tackle specific, measurable challenges.
Why AI Matters
Compared to earlier technologies, the adoption of AI in the modern workplace has happened at an astonishing rate. For example, many businesses found it difficult to shift their operations to the internet, and setting up online training took a similar amount of time. In contrast, AI-driven large language models were implemented into business procedures immediately upon their release and, in certain cases, without any strategic direction to direct their use. Although using this emerging technology is clearly exciting, and learning leaders are always looking for more guidance on how to apply it, L&D professionals can benefit from research-based direction on how to approach generative AI.
Are learning leaders making use of AI at their organizations? How rare, or widespread, or somewhere in between, has applying AI to training become?
As shown in Figure 1, over half (54%) of organizations indicate they’ re using AI for training frequently. On the other hand, 14% have not yet incorporated AI into their L&D tasks and 15% rarely do so. In a sense, what we have is a story of two sides: a swath of enthusiastic adopters and a notably smaller but healthy batch of organizations playing “wait and see.”
