Trumbull, CT – February 7, 2019 – Questionmark, global provider of assessment technologies and solutions, today announced the issuance of a patent for technology enabling the maintenance of an assessment item bank with varying question versions used in assessment instances. This functionality, now addressed by U.S. Patent Number 10,170,013, is a key component of Questionmark’s OnDemand and OnPremise solutions for management, delivery and analysis of tests and exams.
It is common for professional assessment platforms to use a question database, typically called an item bank, to store, organize and manage questions. While this model provides a significant benefit by enabling questions to be selected for use and re-use across multiple tests and exams, it also presents challenges for test administrators when dealing with questions that require revisions and updates.
The new patent includes a method to address this challenge and ensure the accuracy of scoring and results recording when assessments are issued from item banks that are being updated with new versions of questions.
“It’s vital for reasons of legal defensibility and legal certainty that when different questions or different versions of questions are given to test-takers, that each person can be sure that the questions they see and the answers they give are recorded properly and scored fairly. The technology covered by this patent helps safeguard the millions of assessments delivered each year via Questionmark assessment platforms,” said John Kleeman, founder and executive director of Questionmark.
In addition to this new patent, Questionmark also holds other patents including U.S. Patent number 9,055,048 covering secure browser technology used by the Questionmark Secure app, which enables secure delivery of high-stakes tests and exams.
