BOSTON — Sept. 1, 2026 — Today, Scrum.org, the Home of Scrum, announced that it has added a new microlearning training course, Product Backlog Refinement, to its online learning platform. This course was built together with Scrum.org partner Prowareness Academy and is endorsed by Scrum.org. The course is designed to help Scrum Teams develop an in-depth understanding of Product Backlog refinement to be able to facilitate and participate in refinement sessions, collaboratively applying refinement techniques.

In this course, students will gain an in-depth understanding of Product Backlog refinement, an essential and ongoing activity within Scrum. Students will learn how to contribute to an effective, healthy and valuable Product Backlog. By understanding techniques such as slicing, story mapping and the use of spikes, students will discover how to reduce uncertainties and maximize customer value. The course also covers how and when to involve stakeholders.

“The Product Backlog is an ever-changing artifact that requires frequent inspection and if that doesn’t occur, the value of what is being built can be diminished,” said Miriam Blommers, Professional Scrum Trainer at Prowareness and course co-creator. “We built the Product Backlog Refinement microlearning course as a primer to help Scrum Team Members understand the importance of refinement and develop skills and techniques to inspect and adapt the Product Backlog to generate valuable results for their organizations.”

The course is intended for Product Owners, Scrum Masters, Developers, product managers, project managers and those in similar roles who want to strengthen their skills and learn new techniques for Product Backlog refinement to deliver greater value. Throughout the course, students take part in reading, watching videos, interactive activities and quizzes while learning from real-world scenarios. By the end of this course, students will have the tools and confidence to run more effective Product Backlog refinement sessions with their Scrum Team.

“While refinement is not a formal Scrum event, it is an essential practice that teams should not ignore. Many Scrum Teams struggle to make time for it, or treat it as an afterthought, which often shows up later as unclear or poorly sized items in Sprint Planning. It is critical to refine the Product Backlog to enable value delivery,” said Dave West of Scrum.org. “We are very excited to endorse this new microlearning course and add it to our platform of self-paced training courses. It dives deep into a very important topic, with a very small time commitment for students. We are looking forward to releasing more courses like this in the future as we continue to build out our online learning platform.”

Scrum.org-endorsed training courses are developed by Agile experts who work with the Scrum.org team to create engaging, self-paced learning experiences designed to help students build real-world skills and confidence. The course materials are all reviewed, updated and approved by Scrum.org and its instructional designers to ensure a high-quality learning experience.

The Product Backlog Refinement course is taken online, allowing students to proceed at their own pace. There is no time restriction, so it can be taken all at once or over a period of days, weeks or months, depending on what suits the student’s availability and needs. The course, which takes approximately one hour to complete, is now available on the Scrum.org website, and students will receive a certificate of completion once they finish the course.
