EVANSTON, Ill. — June 18, 2020 — Dr. Mona Sue Weissmark has just launched her new book, “The Science of Diversity,” which is now available for media review. The book is available through the publisher, Oxford University Press, and also through Amazon.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Dr. Mona Sue Weissmark is an award-winning professor, researcher, and author, as well as a clinical psychologist. She is a leading expert on diversity, inclusion, and polarized groups and her work on the science of diversity has received global recognition. Dr. Weissmark is best known for her groundbreaking social experiment of bringing together descendants of slaves and slave owners, and descendants of Holocaust survivors and Nazis. Currently, she teaches the course ‘Psychology of Diversity’ and conducts research on the science of diversity at Harvard University.
ABOUT THE BOOK: THE SCIENCE OF DIVERSITY is an innovative work that offers readers a new way to view diversity. The book argues that diversity programs that try to get rid of biases are doomed to fail and that shaming or blaming people are counterproductive in getting rid of their biases. It places diversity in historical, global context and demonstrates that biases are hard-wired into our brains. The book proposes scientific thinking as an intervention method for fostering meaningful conversations on polarizing topics including race, slavery, immigration, political ideologies, and partisan identities.
