SEATTLE — Sep. 1, 2026 — Every AI initiative has two kinds of work happening at once. There’s the building: the models, the infrastructure, the code. And there’s the deciding: which investments to fund, how to measure success, what governance to put in place, when to scale and when to stop. AWS has credentialed technical builders for years. Starting Sept. 1, we’re credentialing the professionals who drive AI adoption alongside them.

AWS Certified AI Business Strategist is a new certification for professionals who evaluate, champion and scale AI initiatives in their organizations: line-of-business leaders driving adoption across their teams, sales professionals articulating AI value to customers, consultants guiding client strategy from experimentation through production and program managers aligning AI investments to business outcomes. The exam tests portable business judgment through enterprise-based scenarios. AWS services appear as practical context, but they are not the subject being tested. The frameworks this certification validates are portable across organizations and industries.

That makes it different from credentials that test knowledge specific to a single provider’s products, platforms and tech stacks. And different from academic programs that cost thousands of dollars over months of coursework, or online programs that may be lower cost but still require weeks to complete. This is a rigorous, proctored exam that validates strategic skills with an industry-recognized credential you can put on your resume immediately.

You’re already driving AI adoption. Now there’s a credential that recognizes it.

Why We Built This

Too many organizations still treat AI as only a technology initiative. It’s also a strategic business initiative, and scaling AI requires a different skill set than building it.

We heard the same thing from customers across industries. Mid-career professionals and senior individual contributors were responsible for AI outcomes but couldn’t prove they had the skills to lead them. Teams were relying on technical staff for decisions that were fundamentally about business value: which use cases to prioritize, how to build a credible business case, what governance to put in place and how to scale beyond a pilot. These are judgment calls, and organizations had no way to identify or develop the people who could make them well.

We also heard from professionals in sales, consulting, operations and business leadership roles who wanted a credential calibrated to strategic decision-making rather than technical implementation. Some had already earned AWS Certified AI Practitioner certification and valued the technical foundation it gave them. But the work they did every day required a different kind of validation. AI Practitioner certification validates technical understanding. AI Business Strategist certification validates business judgment. Transformation requires both.

So we built it. The exam is designed for professionals with at least six months of experience working with or alongside AI initiatives. No coding, AWS implementation experience or other AWS certifications are required.

Why This Matters to You

You’ve probably seen it in your own organization: AI tools are available, technical talent is in place, but initiatives are stuck in pilot purgatory. A recent Harvard Business Review study found that middle managers are bearing the operational burden of AI adoption. They’re making critical decisions about AI usage standards, quality and governance in isolation, without formal support or firm-wide guidance (HBR, 2026). That pattern is playing out everywhere. Eighty-eight percent of organizations now use AI in at least one business function (McKinsey, 2025), yet only 19% say those efforts are producing meaningful business outcomes (ServiceNow/Oxford Economics, 2025).

The reason is structural. Most organizations bolted AI onto existing workflows without redesigning the work itself. Getting out of pilot purgatory requires professionals who can rethink how work gets done, not just which tools to use.

The professionals who can close that gap are the ones organizations need most: the ones who evaluate which use cases justify investment, build business cases that set realistic expectations and manage the change required to scale. Employers are compensating accordingly.

Roles where AI increases the need for human expertise are seeing 42% higher wage growth than roles where AI makes tasks easier for nonexperts (PwC, 2026 Global AI Jobs Barometer). Workers who hold AI credentials win promotions 3.5 times faster than peers (Randstad, May 2026), and nondegree credentials reduce mid-career stall risk by 29% on average (NYU/Burning Glass Institute, 2026).

Without a way to validate these skills, professionals risk being passed over for the AI leadership roles they’re already qualified to fill. If you already hold AWS technical certifications, this credential complements what you have. It validates the strategic layer that shapes what gets built and why. When an organization has professionals certified in both technical implementation and AI business strategy, teams share a common framework for evaluating opportunities and decisions move faster.

What the Exam Tests

This exam covers four domains through scenario-based questions that put you in real business situations.

  • AI Fundamentals and Literacy tests practical understanding of AI concepts, capabilities and limitations in a business context: the knowledge you need to evaluate whether a proposed AI solution fits the problem and to ask the right questions of your technical team.
  • AI Strategy and Business Value Creation is the largest domain. It tests your ability to evaluate use cases, build business cases, quantify ROI and determine when AI is not the right solution. A vendor proposes a $2 million AI deployment. Can you evaluate whether the investment is sound, premature or missing critical success factors?
  • AI Governance and Responsible AI Leadership tests your ability to establish governance structures, manage enterprise AI risk and address regulatory requirements. Organizations that skip governance don’t move faster. They stall when compliance, legal or reputational concerns catch up.
  • Business Readiness, Leadership and AI Transformation tests your ability to assess organizational readiness, manage change and move initiatives from pilots to enterprise deployment.
