In this case, the picture above is worth 50,000 words. In our survey of employees around the world, on every continent, at every level, a single question generated over 50,000 words in response. The question was; “If you could tell your boss just one thing about his or her leadership of you, what would you say?” We used text analytics to distill not just the frequency of words chosen – but the sentiment represented as well. The pie chart you see above portrays the feelings carried by the words we got back. ‘Happiness’ and ‘Love’ were conveyed through almost 70 percent of the aggregate response. Our people aren’t angry – they are waiting. On us.

Now, enjoy the profound nature of a verbatim sampling to “If you could tell your boss just one thing…”

  • Unless someone is bleeding, put the phone away…
  • Stop saying thank you; start doing thank you…
  • Remember even the brightest of smiles can hide the darkest of thoughts…
  • Compliment me and then ask how I do it…
  • You are someone I want to follow, not a boss I have to follow…
  • I am proud to lead others as you lead me…
  • Numbers, data and information are key to success today. Relationships are needed to grow a bright tomorrow…
  • Just be fair. Fair generates loyalty, and loyalty generates commitment…
  • The boss knows how it’s done; the leader shows how it’s done…
  • The future of the company is my future – several thousand voices at a time…
