The Case for Investing in Skills Development for Midlife Professionals

March 20, 2025Bernie Borges 4 min read
A group of women working together on a project.

Midlife professionals have accumulated a wealth of experience by the time they reach their 40s, 50s and beyond, possessing an increasing desire for continued growth personally and professionally. Insights from the “Thriving in Midlife Report” reveal this group actively seeks to acquire new skills in alignment with their pursuit of fulfillment holistically across key life pillars including health, fitness, career, relationships and legacy. This thirst for self-improvement is beneficial both to employers, who can tap into employees’ potential and for individuals alike. “Midlife’s” can demonstrate an impressive interest in reinvention and growth, setting the stage for skills development and fueling motivation, ambition and adaptability of these experienced professionals.

The Desire for Growth Among Midlife Professionals

The “Thriving in Midlife Report” highlights a compelling trend: Midlife professionals are eager to continue learning and growing in their careers. The report found 78.5% of midlife professionals are highly prioritizing learning new professional skills. In addition to career growth, they seek a deeper connection to fulfillment across the key life pillars. And 70% of midlife professionals highly prioritize improving their health and fitness, and 57.2% are putting a high priority on personal growth. This drive reflects more than career growth aspirations. It is clear that midlife professionals want to thrive in every area of their lives.

This desire for professional and personal growth is a timely opportunity for organizations. According to Gallup’s 2024 State of Global Workforce report, 77% of employees are not engaged at work, costing a staggering $8.9 trillion in lost productivity globally. Organizations can improve engagement by offering upskilling programs for midlife employees, tapping into this rich population of experienced individuals eager to grow and thrive.

How Can Employers Help?

Organizations who recognize the opportunity to harness this segment of the workforce possessing valuable skills and a desire to grow can offer resources tailored for midlife professionals. To foster engagement, loyalty and innovation with these midlife professionals, organizations can consider:

  • Offering age-inclusive learning programs: Midlife professionals’ learning habits and preferences are uniquely different from those of other age groups. Unlike younger learners, these experienced professionals need learning methods that respect their existing knowledge while accommodating their complex lifestyles. For example, offering flexible schedules makes learning programs more appealing. Similarly, content variety and learning pathways that leverage prior learning experiences demonstrate an understanding of this group’s needs.
  • Providing reskilling and upskilling programs: Offer options to acquire new technical skills, leadership development, industry-specific certifications, mentoring roles and cross-departmental projects that provide exposure to a variety of skills in the workplace.
  • Aligning training with fulfillment goals: Develop programs that integrate skills development with a holistic value system across the five key life pillars. For example, offering wellness programs recognizing the impact of fitness, mental health and physical health on workplace productivity.
  • Organizing mentoring programs: Proactively develop and encourage two-way mentoring among employees of all age groups. Encourage pairing midlife professionals with younger professionals for two-way mentoring to foster a strong culture of mutual respect.

When organizations proactively offer skills development for midlife professional’s key business metrics can be impacted including engagement, productivity and retention. Additionally, a study by McKinsey & Company found that good holistic health, encompassing physical, mental, emotional and social well-being, is a reliable predictor of employee performance contrasted with happiness or engagement. Additionally, it reduces burnout and can allow employees to work productively for longer durations.

Encouragement for Midlife Professionals

Midlife professionals are encouraged to take proactive steps on their journey to upskilling and growth. Here are examples of how they can find resources to advance their skills:

  • Online courses: Online learning platforms like Udemy offer many options for personal and professional growth learning.
  • Community workshops: Attending local events, seminars and workshops can provide learning opportunities and valuable networking.
  • Mentorship: Proactively seek and develop mentorship arrangements, seeking variety in both cross-skills mentoring (quantitative and qualitative) and age diversity for knowledge sharing and gain.

Anecdotal insights from the “Thriving in Midlife” report offer stories of midlife individuals suggesting that their pursuit of personal and professional growth is a journey that balances non-work with career priorities for a purpose-filled life.

Benefits of Skills Development in Midlife

Midlife professionals are eager to disprove the myth that this is a group unwilling or unable to learn new skills. A Duolingo survey of 2,000 Americans found that 74% of baby boomers express a love for learning new things, with 60% finding it more rewarding now than in their younger years. When “midlife’s” invest in skills development, they impact their lives across the key life pillars:

  • Health and fitness: Nutrition, physical and mental health education improves quality of life, contributing to productivity and enthusiasm.
  • Career: Many midlife professionals have struggled with age discrimination in the workplace. Acquiring new skills strengthens an individual’s competence, enabling them to remain competitive, transition to new roles, earn leadership positions or start their own business.
  • Relationships: Improving communication and emotional intelligence skills fosters stronger connections and workplace bonds, contributing to retention and productivity gains.
  • Legacy: Midlife professionals tend to be more intentional about legacy building, striving to make an impact in community or an individual or through innovation.

The connection between fulfillment across the five key life pillars discussed in the “Thriving in Midlife” report and skill-building can help motivate organizations to support this journey for mutual benefit.

Conclusion

The case for investing in skills development for midlife professionals is clear. These individuals are striving for fulfillment holistically. Organizations are increasingly recognizing the mutual benefits of a commitment to professional growth and personal reinvention. Midlife is becoming recognized as a time of reinvention and continuous learning. By embracing this season of life individuals can realize their full potential, experiencing meaningful fulfillment across the key life pillars.

Organizations that invest in skills development for midlife professionals create opportunities for both personal and professional growth, creating a more engaged workforce. The strategic support of these experienced individuals contributes to a more engaged society. With continued commitment to skills development for midlife professionals, perhaps future reports will find a higher percentage of engaged workers.
